PGT Door Installation: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide
We stock and install PGT-compatible door hardware, rollers, hinges, and full door slabs across Fort Worth, with most hardware replacements running $180 to $420 installed and complete PGT door installations typically landing between $1,400 and $3,800 depending on glass package, size, and frame condition. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a door that suddenly drags across the threshold, a handle that won’t latch, or glass that rattles inside its frame after a storm. The fix usually starts with matching the right PGT part or panel to your existing opening, and that’s the work we do every week.
PGT builds doors around impact-rated glass and reinforced frames, which is honest engineering for North Texas. But Fort Worth’s freeze-thaw cycles and summer heat put real stress on rollers, weatherstripping, and the glazing seals. When a part fails, it’s rarely the glass itself. It’s almost always a mechanical component that wore out on schedule. That’s a replacement, not a mystery.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT’s door lineup splits into two families: the hinged patio and entry doors (WinGuard, PremierVue, and the 4500/5500 series) and the sliding glass doors (WinGuard sliders and the classic 2000/3000 series). The compatibility gotcha that trips up most Fort Worth homeowners is this: PGT roller assemblies changed between the 2000 and 3000 slider generations, and a 2000-series roller will not seat properly in a 3000-series track. The track profiles differ by about 1/8 inch, which is enough to bind the door or chew up the roller within months.
To identify what you have, look for the PGT label etched in the corner of the glass or stamped on the door edge near the hinge. It’ll list the series number and sometimes the manufacturing date. If the label is gone, measure the visible glass height and width, then measure the door slab thickness. That combination gets us to the right part about nine times out of ten. For PGT doors specifically, we recommend OEM parts over aftermarket equivalents whenever the door is a WinGuard or any impact-rated model. The aftermarket rollers and locks are cheap, but the tolerances matter on an impact-rated frame, and a slightly loose roller cup will rattle the glass in the track. On non-impact 2000/3000 series sliders, a quality aftermarket roller set from a brand like Prime-Line or Slide-Co often works fine and saves real money. We stock both on the truck and we’ll tell you which one your door actually needs.
Meridian Windows and Doors Fort Worth is an independent installer and repair shop. We are not affiliated with PGT, and that’s by design. We work on their doors because they’re common in Fort Worth and we know them cold.
Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing
- The door drags or sticks at one point in the track. The roller bearings are flat-spotted or the rollers have worn down enough that the door rides on the track lip instead of the wheels. You’ll usually see metal shavings or a grey powder in the bottom track when this happens.
- The handle turns but the latch won’t engage. The internal gear in the latch mechanism strips after years of use, especially on PGT’s multi-point lock hardware. The handle will spin freely or have a dead spot at the end of its travel. This is a lock replacement, not an adjustment.
- Condensation or haze between the glass panels. The seal between the insulated glass panes has failed. In Fort Worth’s humidity swings, this shows up as fog you can’t wipe off, then permanent mineral streaking on the inside of the glass. The glass unit needs replacement; the frame is usually still good.
- The door rattles inside the frame when the wind kicks up. The weatherstripping has compressed or the door panel has settled out of square, leaving a gap. Left alone, it gets worse every spring when the pollen and dust blow through the gap and gum up the track.
- You have to lift the door to get it to move. This is the critical warning sign. It means the rollers are gone, the door is riding on the track directly, and you’re grinding the track itself down. Every day you keep using it that way, the track repair gets more expensive.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here is what PGT door work actually costs in Fort Worth right now, installed with our labor and one-year written guarantee:
- Roller assembly replacement (single door): $180 – $320
- Multi-point lock or handle set replacement: $220 – $390
- Insulated glass unit replacement (door panel): $500 – $1,100
- Full PGT sliding door installation: $1,400 – $2,800
- Full PGT WinGuard impact door installation: $2,400 – $3,800
The range comes down to three things: the specific PGT series you have, whether the track or frame is still square and serviceable, and whether we’re replacing a part or the entire door slab. Every quote goes in writing before we start, and it does not move at the door. The price covers the part, the labor, haul-off of the old pieces, and the full year of coverage under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair or installation fails within that year, we come back at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look in the bottom track for debris or broken roller fragments, check that the door panel hasn’t visibly sagged at one corner, and confirm whether the handle hardware is loose. Those five minutes tell us a lot over the phone. But actually pulling a PGT door panel out of the track is where DIY goes sideways. A PGT WinGuard door slab can weigh over 250 pounds depending on glass package, and once it’s off the track, it is a two-person job to handle without damaging the frame or the glass edge. Roller swaps also require the right adjustment procedure so the door doesn’t bind or ride too low on the new wheels. If the lock mechanism has failed internally, the handle set usually has to come apart from the inside, and the wrong screw can strip the mortise. We’d rather you call us at (682) 708-0962, tell us what you’re seeing, and let us give you a straight read on whether it’s a $220 part or a full door replacement.
The seal either holds or it doesn’t. We make sure it holds.
FAQs
You can expect 15 to 25 years from a PGT door in Fort Worth before the original rollers, seals, or lock hardware need real attention. The glass itself often outlasts the mechanical parts by a decade or more. Texas sun beats on the weatherstripping, and the fine dust that blows through Fort Worth grinds roller bearings faster than coastal air ever will. Call us at (682) 708-0962 and we can tell you whether your door is at the repair point or the replacement point.
Rollers, locks, weatherstripping, and glass units are replacement items. The frame is the part we can sometimes repair if it’s out of square or the track is worn. Once a roller bearing has failed or a lock gear has stripped, rebuilding the part costs more than the new part and won’t last. A frame that’s simply settled can often be shimmed and squared without replacing the whole door.
A roller replacement or lock change runs 45 minutes to two hours. An insulated glass unit swap takes two to three hours because the panel comes out, the glass glazing is cut away and replaced, and the door goes back in square. Full PGT door installations are usually a half-day for a simple slider, a full day for a WinGuard or a retrofit that needs frame work.
We stock common PGT roller assemblies, lock sets, and aftermarket equivalents on our service vehicles, along with parts for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows doors. If your door needs an unusual glass size or a WinGuard-specific component, we order it and we’ll give you the lead time up front. The price is written down before we order anything.
